The Macworld Experience
By WilliamLH
This begins a week long series of reports from Macworld Expo, Boston. This quite possibly may be the most important Macworld Expo in Apple's history. Why, you ask? Because Apple is in a new form of turmoil. Yes, Apple has had many problems in the past -- new CEOs, bad products, confusing product line, no marketing, bad press and many more too numerous to list -- but Apple was looking like it was starting to turn around. Then Gil Amelio & Ellen Hancock resigned, and Apple began to reneg on its licensing agreements, which could spell the doom of Apple (and I am one of the biggest fighters of the "gloom & doom" stories about Apple, but this move would spell disaster!). And so we come to Macworld Expo 1997, the epitome of Macintosh gatherings, where Mac geeks can run and frolic together without ridicule from those Windows washers.
As I commute in from Framingham, Mass. to Boston I sit on the "T", Boston's public transportation system, and I think about what this exposition will hold for all us Apple lovers. Sure, there will be many new products, including both hardware and software, and lots of classes and conferences, but the meat, the reason I'm here, is for the keynote speech tomorrow by Steven Jobs, Co-Founder of Apple Computer Inc. What he has to say then can affect Apple's future in a positive or extremely negative manner.
Will Mr. Jobs tell us that Apple will not license the MacOS to clone manufacturers? If so, what then will Apple do to make up for this? Will he tell us that Apple is going in a direction that no one expected? Will Ellison be introduced as rumored? Is this a good thing if it is true? (IMHO it would not be in Apple's best interest to bring Ellison aboard.) Will Apple be in turmoil for long, or is there a concrete plan in place that they are about to reveal?
I can only speculate until tomorrow. I will let you know what is going on here at Macworld Expo, Boston 1997 -- stay tuned! ;-)
